Curriculum

Our school is committed to providing a comprehensive and relevant curriculum. The school remains mindful of the ever changing challenges and demands our students will need to confront in this fast moving world. Our curriculum is based on the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS).

There is a considerable emphasis placed on literacy and numeracy. Across the school a consistent approach to both literacy and numeracy is currently in place. The school is currently participating in major projects in literacy – ‘Children’s Literacy Success Strategy’ (CLASS) and in numeracy – ‘Success in Numeracy Education’ (SINE). Throughout the school a priority in given to these key learning areas in terms of time each day.

Significant resources, both in terms of equipment and personnel, have been allocated to ensuring that our children experience a rich, challenging and successful learning environment. Programs such as Reading Recovery, Guiding Readers, BRIDGES to Literacy and ERIK have proven successful in supporting our students.

Our children are encouraged to take on with enthusiasm their life long journey as learners. Teachers aim to provide learning experiences that provide opportunities for all to experience success. Our children are engaged in tasks that challenge them to be problem solvers, to co-operate with their peers, to creatively express themselves and to think laterally.

There is an emphasis on being well informed about our students and their learning progress and their learning needs. Formal and informal assessment is regularly undertaken. A formal written report is written twice a year to parents.

The specialist programs offered at St Andrew’s are Physical Education, Italian and Computer Technology.

The school believes that health and wellbeing are a vital component of a child’s development and to this end we have a healthy eating policy at the school and a strong emphasis on fitness. In addition to the weekly physical education lesson the whole school participates in physical fitness activities for 30 minutes each Tuesday and Thursday at the commencement of the day. The senior children also compete in inter school sporting activities.
